3 Common Types of Winter Roof Damage

Winter can be harsh. It can seem like a long, drawn-out season full of cloudy days and lots of snow. It’s also hard on everything exposed to the elements, including your home’s roof. Unfortunately, not all winter damage is avoidable, especially when there’s a lot of snowfall in the forecast. So, if you suspect that your roof has sustained any winter damage, make sure you call the roofing experts at Watergate Roofing for repairs and maintenance.

1. Ice Dams

Ice dams form when the temperature around the eaves is colder than the main surface. When the sun's heat and the warmth from inside meet, snow or ice on the roof melt. Then the water trickles down and refreezes on the eaves where it's not so warm, causing an ice dam. If these dams are left intact, they can trap water and force it up under the shingles on your roof. Eventually, you're left with more problems than the cold weather, including mold, water leaks, and missing shingles.

2. Icicles

While they might look cool, icicles pose a real threat to the safety of your family and home. As water flows down, the icicles become longer and sharper, eventually falling because of their own weight. If someone is standing beneath when this ice falls, they could be seriously injured. Furthermore, icicles also force water up under your shingles, leading to a significant water leak during the winter months.

3. Condensation

You're probably more familiar with the condensation on windows and doors during the winter. But this accumulation of water can also occur in the attic. By rule of thumb, the attic temperature needs to match the outside or come close to it. If not, you'll be left with a build-up of condensation in your attic. Unfortunately, when this happens, homeowners find themselves with a mold or wood rot problem later on.
