Fiber Cement

The Dos and Don’ts of Fiber Cement Siding Maintenance

Fiber cement siding is an incredibly popular choice for homeowners looking to update their exterior. It’s durable, low maintenance, and comes in a variety of different styles. But like all materials, it does require some upkeep to keep it looking its best. Here are a few tips from Watergate Roofing on how to properly maintain your siding.

Cleaning Your Siding

One of the most important maintenance steps you can take is to keep your siding clean. To do so, use a mild detergent specifically designed for cleaning fiber cement siding, as well as a soft-bristled brush or non-abrasive sponge. This will help remove dirt and debris without damaging the finish of your siding. Pressure washing is not recommended as it can damage the material.

Painting Your Siding

When it comes time to repaint your fiber cement siding, use a high-quality acrylic latex paint that is designed specifically for masonry or stucco surfaces. Make sure that the surface is dry before you start painting, and follow the manufacturer's instructions carefully for the best results. Remember: It's always better to add multiple thin coats of paint than one thick coat!

Repairing Damage

If you do notice any chips or cracks in your fiber cement siding, it's important to address them right away. First, use a putty knife and sandpaper (or an electric rotary tool) to remove any loose pieces from around the damaged area. Then, fill in the gap with an acrylic caulk specially formulated for masonry surfaces. Once that's done, simply apply a coat of paint over the entire area to ensure everything blends together nicely.
