Storm Damage

What To Do If a Tree Falls on Your House

Springtime in Indiana brings a lot of rain and heavy thunderstorms. Many of these carry high winds that can make you feel like they’ll rip your roof off. While high winds tend to carry loose shingles away, they can also cause trees and heavy limbs to topple over. When these natural structures fall on your roof, don’t panic. Instead, follow these steps and call Watergate Roofing.

Call 911

If the damage following a storm is severe enough, calling 911 is in your best interest. Trees can take live powerlines down with them, and attempting to remove any limbs from your roof afterward is dangerous. Climbing on top of your roof during a storm to remove limbs can also expose you to lightning strikes, and puts you at risk of falling through due to structural damage. So, to keep yourself safe, it's best to stay off your roof and call 911 for help.

Evacuate if Necessary

Depending on the damage done to your roof and home, you may need to evacuate for a while. Large branches and limbs can create large holes that expose your home to the elements and pests. So, before the storm arrives, make sure you have an evacuation safety plan in place with your household. It's always a smart idea to have "To-Go" bags packed and ready to go, so your loved ones have the essentials should you need to leave your home.

Contact Your Insurance

Once you've assessed the damage and evacuated, it's time to call your insurance agent. Most insurance companies will cover some, if not all, of the damage. Unfortunately, some circumstances could prevent you from receiving a full insurance claim. For example, if the tree that fell on your home was healthy, insurance will cover it. But if the tree that fell was old and rotted, damage may not be covered. Nevertheless, calling your agent to come out and assess the storm damage sooner rather than later will help get your claim processed sooner.
